Geography
For those who are interested in knowing exact locations, Colorado Springs is located on latitude 38° 49' N and longitude 104° 43' W. Geographically, it is located in the central part of the state, although it is called Southern Colorado. It is situated where the plains of Colorado meets the Rocky Mountains. It is one of the big cities in the Colorado Front Range of the Rockies, the others being Fort Collins, Greely, Denver and Pueblo. Colorado Springs is located about 60 miles south of Denver about 40 miles north of Pueblo and on Interstate 25 (I-25).
Colorado Springs is located at an altitude of 6035 feet, more than 700 feel higher than the city of Denver. Pikes Peak, which rises to an altitude of 14,110 feet. Although Colorado Springs is at an altitude of more than 6000 feet, the altitude of the land rises very slowly as one travels west from Kansas. For many, it is difficult to realize that the altitude has gone up so high as they arrive in Colorado Springs.
The city has a total area of 192 square miles or 122,838 acres as of March 2005. The County of El Paso where Colorado Springs is located has an area of 21,59 square miles.
