Introduction
Colorado Springs is one of America's most beautiful cities. It is located at the base of America's most famous peak, 14,000 foot Pikes Peak, which mesmerized Katherine Lee Bates in 1893 to pen "America, the Beautiful", America's other national Anthem. It is located in the central part of the State of Colorado on Interstate-25, although Coloradans call it Southern Colorado. It lies on eastern side of the majestic Rocky Mountains that run from north to south of the entire US.
Colorado Springs is a clean suburban city with a small but pleasant downtown. It has a population of about 400,000, with the population of the metropolitan area being about 500,000. It is the second largest city in Colorado, soon destined to become the largest.
It is a solidly conservative city which is the county seat of the solidly conservative El Paso County. Its population is majority Caucasian with a large number of Hispanics along with smaller numbers of other races.
Colorado Springs' economy is based on the military, tourism, religious organizations, high-tech industry and the service sector. The United States Air Force Academy that trains the nation's premier Air Force officers is situated in the north part of Colorado Springs. Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Base, where NORAD--North American Air Defense Command is also situated in Colorado Springs. The Air Force Bases in Colorado Springs play a major role in the military aspects of the Department of Homeland Security.
Colorado Springs is the home of the US Olympic Training Center. It has a top-notch national liberal arts college, the Colorado College, in addition to the US Air Force Academy. It has a growing campus of the University of Colorado.
Colorado Springs is nationally well-known for the religious organizations it supports. There are a large number of conservative religious organizations in the city, the primary among them being Focus on the Family. This and other organizations are well-known for pushing conservative religious and social policies for the city, the state and the entire nation.
Colorado Springs is well-connected to the rest of the nation in terms of transportation. Interstate-25 (I-25) runs through the middle of the city. Colorado Springs Municipal Airport is well-connected with non-stop flights to more than a dozen cities. The cities roads and other facilities are in fair condition. The city lacks a good east-west connecting road.
Colorado Springs is a great tourist attraction, a premier travel destination within the US. The US Air Force Academy brings in millions of Americans to the city. Among other attractions, Garden of the Gods, which contain tall red-stone formations in the middle of city, stands out. There is a reputed but small zoo and numerous other tourist attractions. The Rocky Mountains and all the outdoor activities that come with such mountains are only a stone's throw away.
Colorado Springs is home to a large number of high-tech companies such as HP, Agilent, Intel, MCi and Atmel. Most big high-tech companies in the city are branches of large companies somewhere else in the country. The city lacks any big home-grown high-tech company.
Colorado Springs has a large number of radio stations and a few TV stations. Colorado Springs and Pueblo, which is a smaller city about 40 miles to the south, are considered one single TV and radio market. It has a newspaper, the Gazette, with highly conservative editorial page policies. There is a weekly liberal newspaper called the Independent.
Colorado Springs has a mostly pleasant climate that is dry and cool to cold for about 6-8 months of the year. It has about 250 days of sunshine per year. The area is somewhat of a semi-desert based on low precipitation, but one would not know that by looking at well-irrigated lawns that almost every household and every office complex has.
Colorado Springs was founded in 1871 by General William Palmer as a resort community. Palmer contributed immensely to the early history and development of the city. Another individual who played a very significant role in the early history fo the city is Spencer Penrose.
